POLICE URGE NO TRICKS THIS HALLOWEEN
CHILDREN planning on taking part in the Halloween festivities are being urged to behave themselves and stay safe. Next Tuesday (October 31) children across the county will embark on their annual trick-or-treat calls in their neighbourhoods. In Wisbech PCSOs have visited local schools and shops in an attempt to prevent any anti-social behaviour on the night. Sgt Dave Bax said: \"Halloween is always a fun time of year for children but traditionally it also sees an increase in anti-social behaviour. \"Children may think that it is just part of the Halloween festivities to play a trick on people by throwing eggs at their window but for those it happens to it is frustrating and can be intimidating.\" To avoid confusion over whether or not a household is taking part in Halloween police are issuing 'no trick or treaters' posters, which can be downloaded by clicking on the link. The posters can be displayed in windows or doorways and say 'sorry - no trick or treat here - thank you'. PC Andy Key, from the community safety unit, said: \"If children see one of these posters I would urge them not to knock on the door and if people say they are not interested to respect that. \"I would urge parents to ensure they know where their children will be going on Halloween night and remind their children to act responsibly. \"We would also advise children who are taking part in the event to carry a mobile phone with them, not go out too late, take a torch and walk in groups. Ideally children should be accompanied by an adult.\" In the build up to Halloween shop keepers are being asked to be cautious when selling eggs and flour to young people. Officers in central division have given out posters to shops in the area which explain they will not be selling eggs or flour to any young people during the build up to Halloween. Patrols across the division, which covers the Huntingdon, Wisbech, March, St Ives and St Neots areas will be increased during the evening to ensure minimal disruption. In order to reduce anti-social behaviour in the Cambridge area officers from East Chesterton have been visiting local schools to speak to children. Patrols in the city and surrounding villages will also be increased on the night. Sergeant Simon Cross, from Parkside Police Station, said: \"It is not funny to throw eggs or flour and we will deal with such incidents of anti-social behaviour. \"We expect the same standards of behaviour on Halloween as we do every other night of the year.\" In Peterborough patrols will be increased on the evening. PC Tony French said: \"Halloween is always a fun time of year for children, however, it generally sees an increase in anti-social behaviour. \"There will be a number of high visibility patrols in the city and officers will deal with reports of anti-social behaviour.\" For further safety advice contact your local community safety unit on 0845 456 456 4. © 2006 Cambridgeshire Constabulary
