Tiffen family
Looking for any information on Elizabeth Tiffen, born in Wisbech in March 1855, her parents were Harriet Ann (Brown) who married Alphonso Howard Tiffen in 1854. The family moved to Sunderland in about 1860 - I think Alphonso was a seaman.

Hi Cris I have found this out: TIFFEN/TIFFIN ALPHONSO HOWARD TIFFIN (20) 01 September 1854, St. Peter’s, Wisbeach : Vol: 3b, Page: 912 Father: Boland Tiffin Mother: Susannah Spouse: HARRIET ANN BOWN (21) Father: Richard Bown Mother: Mary Wilson But I haven't found a birth in 1854-1856 for Elizabeth. We'll have to check the 1861 census to see where and when she was born. If we have no luck, I'll check with the FFHS tomorrow, (Thursday) Ken

Hi Ken That's great thank you. I'm more interested now in going backwards - Alphonso is an Italian name and I wonder if there is an Italian connection? But then neither of his parents Bolland and Susannah sound Italian names. Wisbech doesn't seem too far from here so one day we will make the trip up - are there any addresses? And if there is an address presumably you would know if it was still standing? Again, thank you Cris :)

Wisbech- 08-03-2006

Hi Cris No ... Beds isn't so far away, but if you are interested in addresses, which ones are you interested in? I will ask my friend if she knows anything about the Tiffen that is in the phone book Any other questions? Just ask!!!

Tiffens!
Thank you Ken I'd be interested in any addresses that either Elizabeth or Alphonso lived in. Wouldn't it be great if the Tiffen in the phone book was a connection? Any information is really welcome especially now I've realised a visit to the area isn't out of the question. Love your site, Wisbech looks so nice, I keep having a browse around Cris

Rick and I spent ages looking over old maps yesterday (Sat) evening trying to find Cook's Hill. I was getting thrown by street names that are still in the area, which turned out not to be the ones. Anyway. This morning I found that Cook's Hill was just across the Walsoken Bridge, from what is now Norlfolk Street, leading onto Walsoken Road, now Norwich Road. As best as I can make out from the enumerators route that Rick sent me, it was just a few yards up on the left where there is now a block of flats, Hanchart Court. Hope that helps you out. If you'd like a map of the area, I will get one sorted out for you. Ken

Hi Ken I can find no trace of Bolland Tiffen before the 1951 census - no birth - but think i've found his father, also a Bolland. The plan is to visit Wisbech soon and hunt through churchyards. Wisbech St.Peter seems to be where family are from, is there more than one church and would you know if there was a chance the church would still hold the old records? So if next week - or could be mid September you see a couple wandering through graveyards, walking up and down town looking for house numbers, clutching camera and notebook, please stop and say hello! Christina

Christina Hi Chris Wisbech St. Peter is the main part of the town and there is a small graveyard surrounding the church. The other main cemetery is situated in Mount Pleasant Road, but from what dates they run, I don't know offhand. There used to be another graveyard associated with St Peters and that is situated at the bottom of St Peter's Road, but there are very few garves or headstones left there now. It has been disused for many, many years. If I get a chance, I'll call in the local Library this Thursday, 24th, and see if I can find out anything for you. The FFHS attend there the 2nd and 4th. Thursday of the month in the afternoon. If I can help any further, please let me know.

Bolland Tiffen
Hi Chris Not much help, I'm afraid. I visited the FFHS this afternoon and found nothing for Tiffin on their records. I also went to the Museum to see if they have any burial records for the Old St Peter's Graveyard at the bottom of St. Peters Road. The only have records of the headstones and I'm afraid no Tiffins there either. However, I did a search on FreeBMD and found a death entry for Bolland Tiffin, aged 77, died Wisbeach, Q4, 1879, 3b, 395. Haven't been able to find anything about Susannah. Only one I have found is Susannah Tiifin, 84, Q1, 1902, Maldon, 4a, 409
